UMD Policy on Academic Probation and Dismissal

Procedures

All students on academic probation or dismissal are assigned an academic advisor to discuss course selections for current and future semesters, as well as individual strategies and resources that will enable them to move towards improved academic performance.

Students on academic probation must meet with an ARHU advisor to discuss plans to transition to good academic standing, make schedule adjustments, and register for the upcoming semester. Academic probation students are also required to meet with a major advisor at least once during their probationary semester.

• Your ARHU advisor will notify you early in the semester to schedule an appointment by calling 301-405-2108 or using ARHU’s online scheduling portal.
• Please bring your self-assessment to your advising session or email it to tllowe@umd.edu in advance of your scheduled meeting. You may also complete an online version of the assessment by using the link emailed to you upon college notification of your academic probation status.

• Strategies and resources for your academic success
• The ARHU Academic Incentive Plan

Students who are academically dismissed must apply to request permission to return to the university. Permission to return is not guaranteed.

There are many resources on campus to help you transition to good academic standing, regardless of the source of your academic challenges. You can find tutoring services and academic success resources which could help you with procrastination, time management, note-taking skills, stress, and much more. The university’s Counseling Center offers counseling services, accessibility and disability support, and other resources to help you get back on track. The University Health Center also provides medical services and health care support to assist students and other members of the campus community. Do not hesitate to reach out if you need help!
